Summary

Elite sports performance is shaped by a dynamic interplay of cognitive, emotional and social processes that influence how athletes prepare for, engage in and recover from high‐pressure competition. Central factors include motivation and goal orientation, self‐efficacy and confidence, attentional focus and mental preparation, emotional regulation and arousal control, and the capacity to cope with setbacks and injury. Psychological safety within teams and support structures enables athletes to disclose mental health concerns, seek help and maintain resilience. Burnout and chronic stress emerge when demands exceed coping resources, undermining both wellbeing and performance. Mental toughness and resilience foster sustained effort, adaptability and recovery under adversity. Interventions range from cognitive–behavioural skills training and imagery to mindfulness and acceptance‐based approaches. Social influences, including coach–athlete relationships and team cohesion, modulate the impact of stressors and support psychological growth. Cultural contexts and organisational policies further shape how mental health and performance goals are balanced. The global significance of this research lies in optimising athlete welfare alongside competitive success, informing evidence‐based practices for practitioners, coaches and governing bodies, and guiding policy to integrate mental health provision within high‐performance environments.
