Summary

Psychological influences lie at the heart of whether and how individuals embrace new technologies. Core cognitive variables such as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use determine initial attitudes, while self-efficacy and prior experience shape confidence and willingness to engage. Emotional responses—including anxiety, stress and enjoyment—further modulate adoption decisions, as do beliefs about risk, trust in the technology and subjective norms within social networks. Motivational constructs such as attitude to learning and information-seeking drive skill acquisition, and cognitive load considerations influence usability perceptions. Research across educational, agricultural and organisational contexts highlights that affective and cognitive components operate in tandem: for instance, positive emotions can bolster technical self-confidence, whereas persistent anxiety may delay uptake even when perceived benefits are high. Cultural, demographic and contextual factors—such as gender differences in risk perception or the nature of required tasks—further nuance acceptance patterns. A global priority is thus to design interventions and interface features that address both rational assessments and emotional reactions, ensuring inclusive strategies for digital skill development and sustainable implementation of emerging technologies.

Recent studies have applied advanced quantitative models to isolate motor skills and visual processing as key drivers of information-technology competence among university students. One structural equation analysis found that fatigue and stress can paradoxically support IT skill development when adequately channelled, while ergonomic factors and baseline cognitive ability showed limited predictive power. The model accounted for approximately 65 per cent of variance in skill acquisition, offering a robust template for curriculum designers and policy-makers seeking to optimise training environments and standardise competency benchmarks.
