Psychosocial Dynamics of Chronic Pain Management
Summary
Chronic pain represents a persistent sensory and emotional experience shaped by a complex interplay of biological, psychological and social factors. Cognitive appraisals, emotional regulation and behavioural responses interact with family dynamics, cultural norms and wider social networks to influence pain perception and disability. Central to management are interventions that address maladaptive cognition—such as catastrophising—and strengthen coping through psychological therapies, peer support and structured self-management. Social relationships can both buffer and exacerbate pain: empathic engagement may activate endogenous reward pathways, whereas solicitous or negative interactions can heighten symptom severity. Advances in ecological assessment and digital health platforms have begun to capture the temporal fluctuations of pain and its social correlates in everyday life, offering real-world insights to tailor interventions. Recognising chronic pain as a global health priority, multidisciplinary approaches now integrate cognitive-behavioural techniques, mindfulness, narrative medicine and network-based analyses to foster resilience, preserve function and improve quality of life across diverse populations.
