Psychosocial Factors and Mental Health in Occupational Settings

Summary

Occupational environments encompass a range of psychosocial factors that influence the mental health of employees. Core dimensions include job demands, control over tasks, social support, effort–reward balance and perceptions of organisational justice. High demands combined with low decision latitude (job strain) and mismatches between effort and reward can precipitate stress responses, sleep disturbances, depressive symptoms and anxiety. Protective resources such as supportive leadership, fair procedures and collegial collaboration foster resilience and reduce the risk of mental ill-health. Recent work has highlighted dynamic changes in these resources over time and their cumulative impact on well-being. Interventions at organisational and team levels, targeting both structural conditions and interpersonal relations, have demonstrated promise for promoting healthier workplaces. Given the global burden of work-related mental disorders, understanding these psychosocial mechanisms is essential for developing evidence-based policies and preventive strategies that can be tailored across industries and cultures.
