Psychosocial Factors in Adolescent Mental Health

Summary

Adolescent mental health is shaped by a complex interplay of psychosocial factors including family dynamics, peer relationships, school environment and broader socioeconomic conditions. Warm and supportive parent–child interactions foster self‐esteem and resilience, whereas conflictual or neglectful family settings increase vulnerability to anxiety and depression. Peer acceptance and quality friendships buffer against stress, yet peer rejection or bullying elevate risk for internalizing and externalizing problems. School connectedness, teacher support and life satisfaction promote positive adjustment, while academic pressure and social comparison can trigger maladaptive coping. Socioeconomic disadvantage, neighbourhood adversity and cumulative life stress heighten exposure to multiple risks, undermining emotional regulation and cognitive development. Conversely, protective factors such as self-confidence, social support and goal orientation enable many adolescents to adapt positively in the face of adversity. This global picture underscores the importance of multi-tiered prevention and intervention strategies that strengthen family bonds, foster positive school climates and address structural inequalities to optimise adolescent well-being.
