Psychosocial Impacts of Traumatic Hand Injuries

Functional limitations hinder return to meaningful work and leisure, while pain and sensory disturbances exacerbate emotional distress. Cultural and socioeconomic factors further modulate recovery, shaping access to resources and social support. A person’s sense of coherence—the ability to view life as comprehensible, manageable and meaningful—emerges as a key resilience factor, influencing adaptation to daily challenges. Effective rehabilitation therefore demands a biopsychosocial approach, integrating physical therapy with psychological screening, patient education and tailored support to optimise quality of life and facilitate reintegration into social and occupational roles.
