Summary

Urban air pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental health challenges worldwide, contributing to millions of avoidable deaths each year through respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Public perception of air pollution often diverges from instrument-measured concentrations, influenced by factors such as pollutant visibility, media coverage, personal health status and socioeconomic background. This perception shapes individual and collective responses, including behavioural changes, support for regulatory measures and uptake of protective strategies. Research indicates that risk perception and environmental health literacy mediate the relationship between exposure awareness and health outcomes, with higher literacy levels associated with more proactive mitigation efforts. Technological interventions—from mobile applications to machine-learning models—are enhancing real-time communication of air quality data and empowering individuals to adjust behaviours such as travel choices and outdoor activities. Nevertheless, disparities persist, particularly in low-resource settings where monitoring infrastructure is limited and public understanding of pollution indices remains low. Bridging the gap between measured risks and public perception is essential for effective policy design, communication strategies and the promotion of protective practices at both individual and community levels.
