Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring Systems Using IoT Technologies

Summary

Increasing anthropogenic pressures on freshwater resources and the need for sustainable management have driven the development of real-time water quality monitoring systems that leverage Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Such systems comprise networks of miniaturised sensors, communication modules and centralised data platforms, enabling continuous acquisition and transmission of critical parameters – including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and conductivity – with minimal human intervention. By deploying sensor nodes in drinking‐water distribution networks, rivers, lakes or coastal areas, stakeholders can gain instantaneous insights into water quality dynamics, detect contamination events and respond promptly to emerging hazards. Integration with cloud and edge computing infrastructures allows for scalable data storage, advanced analytics and machine‐learning‐based anomaly detection, enhancing predictive maintenance and resource allocation. Energy‐harvesting techniques, low‐power wireless protocols and robust enclosures ensure long‐term autonomous operation in harsh environments. Collectively, these IoT-enabled architectures offer a cost-effective, decentralised alternative to conventional laboratory-based analyses, promising improved spatial coverage, higher temporal resolution and more timely decision-support for regulators, utilities and community users worldwide.
