Summary

Dioecious plants, in which male and female functions occur on separate individuals, present unique challenges and opportunities for sexual reproduction. The obligatory outcrossing inherent to dioecy minimises inbreeding but can incur pollen limitation if male and female plants are widely spaced or pollinator visits are unpredictable. Many dioecious species have evolved compensatory traits such as precocious flowering, high floral synchrony, enhanced floral displays or specialised rewards to attract a diverse suite of insect, bird or mammal pollinators. Wind pollination also occurs in some temperate and island taxa, where abiotic vectors substitute for scarce biotic agents. Spatial segregation of sexes often drives sex‐specific growth patterns, with differential resource allocation to flowering and fruiting. Fruit traits in female individuals—from fleshy drupes to dry samaras—further interact with animal or wind dispersers, linking pollination ecology to seed dispersal and population dynamics. Recent advances have illuminated genetic controls of sex determination, developmental pathways for secondary sexual dimorphisms and the ecological drivers of sexual system transitions. Understanding these processes is vital for conservation of dioecious taxa in fragmented landscapes, for the sustainable management of dioecious crops and for predicting responses to climate‐driven shifts in pollinator communities.
