Reproductive Biology of Crustacean Species
Summary
Crustaceans exhibit a remarkable diversity of reproductive strategies, ranging from broadcast spawning in pelagic shrimps to elaborate brooding in clawed lobsters and land crabs. Sexual maturity is typically determined by size or age and is accompanied by morphological and physiological changes in the gonads. Oogenesis in females involves the synthesis and deposition of yolk proteins during vitellogenesis, while spermatogenesis in males produces specialised spermatozoa adapted for internal or external fertilisation. Many decapods practise multiple spawning or total spawning, with oocyte development staged histologically to reveal patterns of synchronous or asynchronous recruitment. Brood care varies widely: some species carry eggs under the abdomen until hatching, whereas others release larvae directly into the water column. Larval development often comprises several zoeal stages followed by a megalopa phase, during which metamorphosis is completed. Environmental factors such as temperature, salinity and food availability modulate reproductive timing and fecundity, with implications for population dynamics and fisheries management. Advances in histology, lipid profiling and molecular tools have deepened our understanding of energy allocation, endocrine control and the impacts of environmental stressors on reproduction. This body of knowledge underpins sustainable aquaculture practices, stock assessment and conservation measures for commercially and ecologically important crustacean species.
Research from Nature Portfolio
A foundational multidisciplinary study applied histological analysis, lipid quantification and chemometric approaches to unravel the seasonal reproductive cycle of a common prawn species. Researchers determined size at first maturity and defined five ovarian stages through microscopic examination. The Gono-Somatic Index (GSI) was correlated with total lipid and fatty acid profiles, revealing that polyunsaturated fatty acids peak in early spawning months to support embryogenesis, whereas saturated lipids accumulate in summer as energy reserves for larval development. Principal Component Analysis explained the majority of variance in reproductive metrics, highlighting strong seasonality in gonad composition. This integrative framework provides a template for linking physiological condition to reproductive output and may inform broodstock selection in aquaculture.
Reproductive Biology of Crustacean Species publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in reproductive biology of crustacean species across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Gono-Somatic Index (GSI): A ratio of gonad mass to body mass, used to assess reproductive effort and spawning cycles.
Oogenesis: The process of oocyte formation and development in the ovary, including vitellogenesis and yolk deposition.
Vitellogenesis: The phase of oogenesis during which yolk proteins are synthesised and accumulated in developing oocytes.
Embryogenesis: The sequence of developmental events from fertilisation to hatching, encompassing cell division, differentiation and morphogenesis.
