Summary

Marine invertebrates exhibit a remarkable diversity of reproductive strategies, ranging from external broadcast spawning to internal brooding and viviparity. Gametogenesis and spawning synchrony are often tuned to environmental cues such as temperature, photoperiod and lunar cycles, while larvae may be planktotrophic—feeding in the water column—or lecithotrophic—relying on yolk reserves. Brooding and viviparity have evolved repeatedly among echinoderms, molluscs and cnidarians, offering offspring protection in harsh or nutrient-poor environments. Such strategies involve energetic trade-offs, with parents reallocating somatic reserves to gamete production or provisioning. In many brooders, for example, the pyloric caeca serve as reserve organs during prolonged incubation. Patterns of reproductive output influence population connectivity, resilience to disturbance and the design of marine protected areas. Understanding these processes is crucial for sustainable fisheries management, aquaculture development and conservation of species vulnerable to climate change and habitat loss.
