Summary
Marsupials represent a distinctive branch of mammalian reproduction, characterised by a brief gestation, the birth of highly altricial young and an extended lactation period during which development continues within a maternal pouch (marsupium). Embryonic diapause, in which development is temporarily arrested, allows synchrony between birth and favourable environmental conditions. Lactational strategies vary markedly among species, featuring dynamic changes in milk composition that meet the shifting nutritional and immunological needs of the joey. Neuroendocrine controls orchestrate rapid postpartum oestrus or seasonal breeding, while genomic studies have begun to reveal conserved gene networks underpinning these processes.
