Reproductive Ecology and Behavior of South American Snakes

South America hosts an extraordinary diversity of snakes that exhibit a spectrum of reproductive modes, from egg‐laying to live birth, reflecting adaptations to varied climates and habitats. In tropical lowlands such as the Amazon basin, numerous species reproduce year-round, whereas those in seasonally dry forests and highland regions synchronise mating and parturition to coincide with rainfall or temperature peaks. Viviparous lineages, notably within Boidae and Viperidae, allocate considerable maternal resources to developing offspring, whereas oviparous colubrids and dipsadines often produce large clutches of small eggs and may employ communal nesting sites to enhance hatchling survival. Courtship and mating behaviours range from simple alignment and tail-vibrations to complex ritualised displays, often influenced by pheromonal cues. Environmental factors such as ambient temperature and prey availability drive vitellogenesis and ovulation timing, while microhabitat selection for nesting or gestation reflects trade-offs between thermal stability and predation risk. Patterns of sexual dimorphism—females frequently larger in species with high fecundity, males exhibiting enlarged heads or tails where male–male competition is intense—underscore the influence of mating systems on morphology. Sperm storage and facultative multiple matings occur in several caenophidian snakes, promoting genetic diversity within populations. Together, these strategies illustrate how South American snakes balance energy investment, offspring survival and predation pressures across disparate ecosystems.
