Reproductive Physiology of Dromedary Camels

Summary

Dromedary camels exhibit a pronounced seasonal reproductive pattern driven by changes in day length and ambient temperature. As short-day breeders, both males and females respond to decreasing photoperiod through cascades of hormonal events orchestrated by the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis. In females, the transition to the breeding season is marked by a resumption of follicular waves, rising oestradiol concentrations and eventual ovulation, with corpus luteum formation and progesterone production preparing the endometrium for potential pregnancy. In males, the rutting season is characterised by enlargement of the testes, intensification of spermatogenic activity within seminiferous tubules and elevated circulating testosterone. Morphological adaptations include increased diameter of seminiferous tubules, enhanced vascularity of the testicular parenchyma and development of secondary sexual features such as poll glands. Reproductive performance is also influenced by metabolic status and environmental stressors; antioxidant defences within testicular tissue fluctuate seasonally to protect against lipid peroxidation. Unique aspects of camelid reproduction, such as induced ovulation in females and the complex dynamics of male courtship behaviours, reflect evolutionary adaptations to arid environments. Understanding these physiological processes underpins strategies to manipulate breeding seasonality, optimise semen collection and improve fertility outcomes, with significant implications for pastoral communities and intensive production systems across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
