Reproductive Politics and Sexuality in State Socialism

Under state socialist regimes, reproductive politics and sexuality were shaped by centralised planning, ideological imperatives and evolving medical expertise. Pronatalist policies sought to bolster population growth while simultaneously promoting women’s labour participation. Abortion, contraception and sex education were alternately regulated, endorsed or restricted according to demographic targets and moral frameworks. Medical practitioners and state authorities framed fertility within a socio-medical paradigm that linked marital harmony, working conditions and broader socio-economic factors to prenatal outcomes. Sexual norms were constructed within official discourse to reinforce gender roles that served both reproduction and social stability. Transnational exchanges – whether through professional networks, international organisations or religious institutions – introduced competing models of family planning, eugenic thought and sex education, creating a dynamic interplay between global currents and local adaptations. Research highlights how the tension between individual autonomy and state interests continues to inform contemporary debates on reproductive rights and gender equality.
