Resistance Training Methodologies in Sports Performance Enhancement
Summary
Resistance training underpins the development of strength, power and functional capacity across virtually all sports. Contemporary methodologies range from traditional linear periodisation, which systematically alters volume and intensity over a training cycle, to more refined approaches such as force-velocity profiling, velocity-based training and cluster sets. Concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions each elicit distinct neuromuscular and morphological adaptations, with eccentric loading often promoting greater mechanical stress at lower metabolic cost. Plyometric and ballistic exercises exploit the stretch-shortening cycle to augment explosive power, while post-activation protocols leverage brief high-intensity contractions to transiently heighten subsequent performance. Individualisation of load prescription—whether via one-repetition maximum testing or real-time velocity feedback—ensures that stimuli remain both effective and safe. Advances in wearable sensors and machine learning promise ever more precise monitoring of power output, fatigue and movement quality in ecological settings. Collectively, these methodologies have global significance, informing athlete preparation from youth development to elite competition, and offering tangible improvements in jumping, sprinting and change-of-direction tasks when carefully integrated into broader training frameworks.

Resistance Training Methodologies in Sports Performance Enhancement publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in resistance training methodologies in sports performance enhancement across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Plyometric training: Exercises that utilise rapid transitions between muscle lengthening and shortening to enhance explosive power.
Stretch-shortening cycle (SSC): The coordinated sequence of eccentric muscle stretch immediately followed by concentric contraction.
Force-velocity profile: The relationship between the force an athlete can produce and the speed of movement, used to individualise training loads.
Concentric contraction: Muscle action during which fibres shorten as they develop tension (e.g., lifting phase of a squat).
Eccentric contraction: Muscle action during which fibres lengthen under tension (e.g., lowering phase of a squat), often yielding greater mechanical stimulus.
