Resource Orchestration and Organizational Performance

Summary

Resource orchestration, derived from the resource-based view, emphasises not only the possession of valuable, rare resources but also the deliberate managerial actions that structure portfolios, bundle complementary assets and leverage them to sustain competitive advantage. These actions unfold through three core processes: structuring the resource endowment by acquiring, divesting or configuring talent, technologies and relationships; bundling resources into integrated capabilities; and leveraging these capabilities across markets and networks. By focusing on microfoundational activities—how managers sequence decisions, align internal units and coordinate with external actors—resource orchestration bridges the gap between static resource stocks and dynamic organisational performance. Empirical research now shows that effective orchestration enhances innovation outcomes, operational responsiveness and financial returns, especially in contexts of digital transformation, global supply chains and volatile environments. Practical applications range from optimised new product development through tailored digital investments to improved service delivery via decentralised decision authority. As organisations face rising uncertainty, the strategic interplay of orchestration processes with boundary spanning, knowledge integration and adaptive governance has emerged as a critical determinant of resilience and sustained growth. Across sectors and geographies, authors have highlighted how orchestration shapes strategic agility, fosters collaborative networks and underpins sustainable value creation, further integrating with digital ecosystems and environmental stewardship agendas.

Research from Nature Portfolio

Recent studies have demonstrated that in the context of Indonesian state-owned bank branches, branch managers’ boundary spanning actions are positively associated with resource orchestration, which in turn influences branch performance under varying degrees of environmental uncertainty and goal conflict. Findings indicate that while boundary spanning and orchestration jointly enhance outcomes, the strength of their impact shifts with external unpredictability. Intriguingly, high conflict among objectives increased boundary spanning but did not affect orchestration processes, suggesting cultural factors modulate orchestration efficacy.
