Restorative Practices in Educational Environments

Restorative practices constitute a paradigm shift in school culture, moving from punitive discipline to relational approaches that foreground dialogue, accountability and the repair of harm. Originating from restorative justice principles, these methods include community‐building circles, peer mediation and restorative conferences designed to foster empathy, mutual respect and social‐emotional competence. By prioritising relationships between students, staff and the wider community, restorative practices aim to reduce exclusionary sanctions, improve school climate and support positive youth development. Successful implementation depends on coherent leadership, aligned policies and sustained professional development, with attention to contextual factors such as school size, demographics and resource availability. Globally, restorative practices have been adapted across primary, secondary and tertiary settings, demonstrating benefits in behaviour management, conflict resolution and emotional literacy. Integration with complementary frameworks—such as trauma‐informed care and multicultural education—further enhances their capacity to address systemic inequities and support learner wellbeing. As evidence accumulates, schools are increasingly recognising restorative practices as both a preventive and corrective strategy for building inclusive, safe and supportive learning environments.
