Risky Sexual Behavior Among Youth
Summary
Youthful engagement in sexual activity carries potential health and social risks when practised without adequate knowledge, protection or support. Risky sexual behavior encompasses early sexual debut, multiple sexual partnerships, inconsistent or unsafe contraceptive use, and substance use during intercourse. These behaviours contribute to elevated rates of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies and psychosocial consequences. Underlying factors span individual attitudes and knowledge, peer and family influences, socioeconomic context and access to education or healthcare services. Protective elements include comprehensive sexuality education, parental monitoring, life‐skills interventions and youth‐friendly health provision. Recent advances highlight the importance of predictive analytics, syndemic approaches to co-occurring mental health and substance misuse, and context-adapted educational strategies to reduce harm. The global significance of this field is underscored by efforts to align research with policy frameworks for adolescent health, to develop targeted interventions and to integrate emerging technologies into prevention and outreach programmes.
Research from Nature Portfolio
A community-based cross-sectional study in southern Ethiopia found that over three-quarters of sexually active adolescents reported at least one form of risky sexual behaviour. Early initiation at a mean age of 15 years, rural residence, female gender, exposure to sexualised media and lack of parental monitoring emerged as independent predictors of unsafe practices. School attendance was associated with lower odds of harm, suggesting that educational engagement provides a protective environment. Findings stress the need for tailored community and school-based strategies, including strengthening parental guidance and media literacy, to address the high prevalence among rural adolescents.
