Summary

Prolonged sitting during working hours has emerged as a pervasive challenge to employee health, contributing to elevated risks of cardiometabolic disease, musculoskeletal strain and reduced wellbeing. In response, researchers have devised a spectrum of interventions that target the physical and social environment of the workplace, individual behaviour change and organisational culture. Common strategies include adjustable workstations that enable seated-to-standing transitions, digital prompts or applications that encourage microbreaks and integrated systems of reminders, coaching and feedback. Multicomponent approaches combine these elements with educational or motivational components to amplify impact. The effectiveness of interventions hinges on feasibility, acceptability and sustained engagement, with emerging evidence emphasising the value of human-centred design, privacy-sensitive monitoring and alignment with organisational processes. Globally, offices, call centres and other sedentary work contexts have become focal settings for policy initiatives aimed at reducing sitting time, improving postural variety and mitigating the health burden associated with sedentary occupations. Practical applications range from low-cost behavioural prompts to high-investment sit–stand furniture, all underpinned by an ethos of integrating movement into routine work life without compromising productivity or employee autonomy.
