Summary

Seed germination and longevity dynamics encompass the physiological, biochemical and genetic processes that govern the transition of a quiescent seed to an actively growing seedling, as well as the maintenance of viability during storage. Germination involves water uptake, metabolic reactivation and cell expansion, often regulated by hormonal balances between abscisic acid and gibberellins. Technical terms

Dormancy: A physiological state in which viable seeds fail to germinate under otherwise favourable conditions, often imposed by hormonal or structural constraints.

Viability: The capacity of a seed to germinate and develop into a normal seedling under standard conditions.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS): Chemically reactive molecules derived from oxygen, including superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, which can cause oxidative damage or act as signalling molecules.

After-ripening: A period of dry storage during which dormant orthodox seeds undergo internal changes that relieve dormancy and enhance subsequent germination.
