Summary
Men who have sex with men (MSM) remain among the populations at highest risk for HIV infection globally, owing to a confluence of behavioural, social and structural factors. Patterns of sexual behaviour—including partner number, frequency of condomless anal intercourse, engagement in transactional sex and participation in chemsex—drive transmission dynamics. Early sexual debut and self‐perceived risk shape individual strategies for prevention and care, while stigma and legal barriers can hinder access to testing, treatment and prevention services such as pre‐exposure prophylaxis. Network characteristics influence both onward transmission and the reach of interventions: tight‐knit communities may facilitate rapid uptake of health information but also amplify risk if preventive tools are underused. Contemporary research emphasises the integration of digital tools, sophisticated analytical methods and ethnographic insight to design adaptive, culturally sensitive interventions. Understanding these multifaceted patterns is essential for tailoring public health responses and achieving sustained reductions in HIV incidence among MSM.
