Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are a set of standardised narratives and quantitative scenarios that describe plausible global developments in demographics, economics, technology and governance throughout the twenty-first century. They provide a common framework to assess how socioeconomic trends could interact with climate policies, offering a structured basis for estimating future greenhouse gas emissions and evaluating mitigation strategies. Each of the five SSPs spans a spectrum of challenges to mitigation and adaptation, from rapid fossil-fuelled growth with high warming potential to sustainable development pathways compatible with stringent climate goals. By integrating demographic projections, GDP trajectories and technology uptake, SSPs underpin integrated assessment models (IAMs) that quantify the costs, feasibility and impacts of policy options such as carbon pricing, renewable-energy deployment and land-use change. The SSP framework enables policymakers and researchers to compare low-carbon investment needs, assess equity and justice implications across regions and to explore synergies between climate action and sustainable development objectives. In practical terms, SSPs inform national net-zero strategies, guide multilateral climate negotiations and shape risk assessments for infrastructure, agriculture and public health under varied socioeconomic futures.

Recent studies have advanced the projection of greenhouse gas emissions and the evaluation of mitigation ambitions under diverse socioeconomic conditions. A unified modelling framework now offers sector-by-sector projections of emissions to 2050, revealing stark contrasts between emerging and advanced economies and highlighting the critical role of energy sector dynamics in driving global trajectories. This framework employs Bayesian methods to align national projections with integrated assessment model outputs, uncovering discrepancies that demand more consistent policy benchmarks. Separately, probabilistic analyses of nationally determined contributions demonstrate that current pledges fall well short of a likely pathway to 2 °C or 1.5 °C limits. On existing trends, the probability of remaining below 2 °C warming is under 10%, but if all parties meet and then exceed their contributions, this rises to about one quarter. The work indicates that emissions reduction rates must accelerate to nearly double current annual declines, emphasising the need for more ambitious targets and sustained post-2030 action.
