Summary

Adolescence represents a critical developmental period marked by profound changes in sleep architecture, circadian rhythm alignment and reward processing. During this time, many young people experience shortened or irregular sleep and rising experimentation with substances such as alcohol, tobacco and cannabis. A growing body of evidence points to a bidirectional relationship: poor sleep may increase vulnerability to substance use by dysregulating neural reward circuits and impairing self-regulation, while substance use can exacerbate insomnia, hypersomnolence and social jetlag. Social and environmental factors—peer influence, academic pressures and late-night electronic media use—compound biological susceptibilities. Across diverse populations, sleep disturbances in adolescence have been linked to higher rates of binge drinking, early tobacco initiation and cannabis use, with potential long-term consequences for mental health, academic attainment and injury risk. Interventions that target sleep timing and quality, such as school-based sleep education or cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, show promise in curbing substance experimentation. Addressing sleep health early may therefore serve as a preventive strategy against the onset and escalation of adolescent substance use.
