Smart Wound Monitoring and Treatment Technologies
Summary
Smart wound monitoring and treatment technologies integrate sensing, diagnostic and therapeutic functions into advanced dressings or patches, aiming to transform the management of acute and chronic wounds. By combining flexible electronics, responsive biomaterials and wireless data transmission, these systems provide continuous, real-time assessments of biochemical and physical wound parameters—such as pH, temperature, oxygenation, glucose levels and specific biomarkers of infection or inflammation—and can trigger on-demand interventions. Such closed-loop platforms leverage stimuli-responsive polymers, printed sensors and embedded microheaters or drug reservoirs to deliver antimicrobials, growth factors or electrical stimulation precisely when and where needed. The convergence of materials science, microfabrication and bioelectronics has yielded devices that offer remote monitoring, personalised feedback and feedback-controlled therapy, with the potential to reduce hospital visits, lower healthcare costs and accelerate healing while minimising complications.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Foundational work has demonstrated the feasibility of low-cost, disposable sensors integrated directly onto standard wound dressings to wirelessly monitor bleeding, pH fluctuations and mechanical pressure. These printed ensembles couple a disposable sensor layer with a reusable electronics module, offering early warning of infection and long-term progression data for remote clinicians. In parallel, bioresorbable elastic nanofibrous sheets incorporating metallic microheaters have been developed for on-demand antibiotic release. When electrically stimulated, the heater raises local temperature to trigger controlled drug delivery from the fibres, providing temporal control over antibiotic dosing and reducing systemic side effects. Together, these studies illustrate how printed electronics and degradable functional materials can be merged to produce flexible, biocompatible platforms capable of both sensing wound status and administering treatment in situ.
