Summary

Social cognition encompasses the mental processes by which children perceive, interpret and respond to the social world. From infancy, youngsters attend to faces, voices and gestures, gradually constructing concepts of agency, intention and emotion. As children progress through the preschool and school years, they develop theory of mind—the ability to attribute mental states to others—which underpins perspective taking, empathy and moral reasoning. Alongside cognitive maturation, social environments shape expectancies of fairness, cooperation and trust. Children learn to negotiate group norms, evaluate social status cues and manage reputations, with individual differences influenced by culture, family and schooling. Advances in developmental neuroscience have begun to map the neural circuits that support these abilities, while educational and clinical applications seek to harness early social‐cognitive strengths and mitigate bias. Understanding the interplay between intrinsic motives and extrinsic influences is crucial for fostering social competence and reducing inequality from early life onwards.

Recent studies have examined children’s motivations for seeking information. In one investigation involving over 500 participants aged 4–12, scholars found that young learners integrate three core factors when choosing what to learn: the degree to which information reduces uncertainty, its usefulness for guiding action and its likelihood of yielding positive outcomes. The research revealed that preferences for actionable and positive information emerge around age four, followed by an increasing drive to resolve uncertainty by age five. These developmental trajectories highlight how children’s curiosity is multifaceted and evolves with age, offering insights into the design of educational tools that align with children’s shifting priorities.
