Social Media Marketing and Brand Equity Dynamics

Summary

Social media marketing has transformed the manner in which organisations cultivate and manage brand equity, the composite value derived from consumer perceptions, associations and loyalty. By leveraging platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and emerging networks, firms deploy targeted content, interactive campaigns and community–building activities to shape brand awareness, enhance brand image and foster trust. The dynamic interplay between consumer engagement and user-generated content generates both opportunities and challenges: on one hand, real-time feedback and viral word-of-mouth amplify reach and deepen emotional bonds; on the other hand, negative commentary can rapidly erode reputation. Contemporary frameworks view social media marketing activities as multidimensional constructs encompassing entertainment, customisation, interactivity and trendiness. These dimensions drive electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM), which in turn mediates effects on cognitive and affective components of equity. The resulting brand equity influences behavioural outcomes such as purchase intention, repurchase intention and loyalty. A global perspective reveals variations in platform preferences, cultural norms and regulatory environments, yet the underlying principle remains consistent: the quality of social interactions and the credibility of messaging determine the trajectory of brand equity in a networked marketplace.
