Summary
Social networks serve as vital conduits for the exchange of information, know-how and practical advice among farmers, extension agents and other stakeholders in the agricultural innovation system. The structure and strength of interpersonal ties—from tight-knit neighbourhood clusters to broader digital communities—influence how rapidly and widely new tools, practices and technologies are taken up. Empirical work demonstrates that farmers who occupy central positions in local advice networks tend to acquire knowledge more effectively and to adopt innovations sooner. Conversely, weak or fragmented ties can impede learning, prolong uncertainty about benefits and raise perceived risks. Technology adoption is also shaped by complementary factors such as institutional support, credit access, market incentives and climatic pressures. Extension services, demonstration plots and peer-to-peer training often interact with informal networks to amplify diffusion, yet these interactions can be competitive or synergistic depending on the incentives and norms at play. Recent research has highlighted that network position, social influence and targeted incentives can either accelerate or crowd out the spread of agricultural practices, with significant implications for resilience, productivity and environmental sustainability. A nuanced understanding of network dynamics is therefore essential to design effective policies and interventions that harness farmers’ social capital for widespread uptake of sustainable technologies.
