Socioeconomic Influences on Adolescent Brain Development

Summary

Socioeconomic context shapes adolescent neural trajectories through diverse pathways. Variations in family income, parental education and neighbourhood resources are associated with structural and functional alterations in regions supporting memory, executive control and emotional regulation. Lower socioeconomic status is linked with reduced volumes in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, attenuated white matter integrity in major tracts and accelerated cortical thinning in language‐supporting regions. By contrast, higher socioeconomic status often coincides with protracted cortical maturation, more segregated functional networks and resilience of cognitive–behavioural functions despite environmental stress. These effects emerge against a backdrop of chronic stress exposure, differential environmental enrichment and variation in access to educational and social resources. Understanding these mechanisms highlights opportunities for policy interventions—such as anti‐poverty programmes and enriched educational experiences—that may buffer adversity and promote equitable brain development across adolescence.

Recent studies have demonstrated that state‐level economic factors moderate associations between family income and brain structure in preadolescents, with low‐income families in high cost of living regions exhibiting smaller hippocampal volumes and elevated internalising symptoms, whereas generous cash benefit programmes attenuate these disparities. A theoretical framework posits that childhood socioeconomic advantage slows the pace of cortical maturation and functional network segregation, leading to more efficient cortical organisation in adulthood, while socioeconomic adversity accelerates maturation through chronic stress exposure. Complementing these findings, analyses of large community samples show that non‐representative sampling can bias observed age‐related trajectories of cortical and subcortical development, underscoring the importance of socioeconomic diversity in cohort design to accurately capture neural maturation patterns across adolescence.
