Summary

Socioeconomic factors profoundly shape the global distribution and dynamics of HIV/AIDS by determining individuals’ exposure to risk, access to prevention and treatment services, and capacity to sustain healthy behaviours. Poverty and inequality can heighten vulnerability by driving transactional sex, limiting educational opportunities and constraining access to health care. Conversely, higher socioeconomic status may initially correlate with greater mobility and social mixing, sustaining transmission in some settings. Urbanisation and population density influence patterns of sexual networks and service provision, while gender inequality and labour migration further exacerbate disparities. Structural determinants such as education, employment and social protection programmes interact with biomedical interventions—such as antiretroviral therapy roll-out—to modify incidence and prevalence trends. Effective responses thus require integrated strategies that address both the social context of risk and the biomedical management of infection.
