Sodium Butyrate Applications in Gut Health and Animal Nutrition

Summary

Sodium butyrate, a salt form of the short-chain fatty acid butyrate, has emerged as a versatile additive for promoting gut integrity, optimising microbial balance and enhancing growth performance across livestock species. In the gastrointestinal tract, butyrate serves as a primary energy source for enterocytes, reinforces epithelial barrier function through upregulation of tight junction proteins and exerts anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of histone deacetylases. Its modulatory action on the gut microbiota fosters expansion of beneficial bacterial genera while suppressing pathogens, thereby reducing reliance on antibiotic growth promoters. In poultry and swine production, dietary inclusion of sodium butyrate has been linked to improved feed conversion ratio, greater villus height and crypt depth ratios and enhanced immune responses. In ruminants and early-weaned mammals, it supports rumen development and mitigates post-weaning enteritis. Moreover, novel formulations such as protected or encapsulated sodium butyrate allow targeted release in distal gut regions, maximising efficacy under variable farming conditions.

Sodium Butyrate Applications in Gut Health and Animal Nutrition publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in sodium butyrate applications in gut health and animal nutrition across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs): Organic acids of fewer than six carbons produced by microbial fermentation of dietary fibre, serving as energy substrates and signalling molecules in the gut.

Gut microbiota: The complex community of microorganisms inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract, which influences host nutrition, immunity and health.

Tight junction proteins: Transmembrane and cytosolic proteins (e.g. claudins, occludin, ZO-1) that seal intercellular spaces in the epithelium to maintain barrier integrity.

Feed conversion ratio (FCR): A measure of animal productivity, calculated as the amount of feed intake required to achieve a unit of body weight gain.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC): An enzyme family that removes acetyl groups from histones, affecting gene expression; inhibition by butyrate can modulate inflammatory and barrier-related genes.
