Spatial Dynamics and Cultural Heritage of Traditional Villages

Summary

Traditional villages represent repositories of intangible and material heritage, embodying centuries of human–environment interaction. Their spatial dynamics are shaped by a combination of natural topography, hydrological systems, transportation networks and socio-economic development. Morphological features such as settlement clustering, agglomeration around river valleys and elevation thresholds reflect both historical land-use practices and current pressures from urban expansion. At the same time, cultural heritage manifests in architectural styles, vernacular landscape patterns and embedded customary practices that contribute to local identity and tourism potential. Research in this area seeks not only to map spatial distribution and detect influencing factors but also to inform conservation policies, sustainable revitalisation and the protection of cultural landscape genes that underpin village continuity and resilience.

Recent analyses of village distributions have employed spatial statistics to reveal pronounced clustering in mountainous and riverine regions. One study of more than 1,600 settlements identified three major high-density agglomerations and demonstrated that topography and proximity to river systems dominate the spatial configuration, while road accessibility and economic indices exert secondary yet significant effects. Strategic policy support combined with favourable economic conditions was shown to enhance the conservation and transmission of local cultural practices. A complementary investigation in a subtropical karst region applied average nearest neighbour and density-based methods alongside a Geodetector model to 724 villages, confirming that environmental substrates, intangible heritage resources and edge effects jointly govern spatial heterogeneity. This work underscores the synergistic influence of natural and cultural drivers on traditional village clustering and informs targeted conservation strategies in complex terrain.
