Most cultivated sturgeon species require extensive broodstock management, intricate larval rearing protocols and long grow-out periods before harvest. Health management underpins profitability and sustainability, encompassing biosecurity measures, vaccination strategies, disease surveillance and diagnostic tools to combat viral, bacterial and parasitic threats. Chronic stressors such as elevated temperatures, water quality deterioration and nutritional imbalances further compound disease susceptibility. Integrated approaches that combine molecular biomarkers, real-time pathogen detection and selective breeding for disease resistance are increasingly adopted. These efforts not only safeguard farm productivity but also support restocking programmes aimed at reversing declines in wild sturgeon populations.

Recent studies have leveraged high-throughput sequencing and immunological assays to elucidate sturgeon host–pathogen interactions. In hybrid sturgeon challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila, comprehensive transcriptome profiling of spleen tissue revealed marked upregulation of innate immune pathways, including toll-like receptor, NF-κB, complement and scavenger receptor signalling. Thousands of candidate SNPs and SSRs were identified, offering tools for selective breeding of disease-resistant lines. In Russian sturgeon subjected to bacterial challenge, serum amyloid A emerged as a robust positive acute-phase protein. An in-house ELISA enabled quantification of SAA in circulation, establishing a non-invasive biomarker that mirrors hepatic gene expression and provides early warning of inflammatory responses. Together, these molecular advances furnish the industry with precise diagnostics and genomic resources to enhance health management and biosecurity.
