Sustainable Watershed Management for Agricultural Productivity

Summary

Sustainable watershed management integrates hydrological, ecological and agricultural practices to optimise water use, safeguard soil and maintain ecosystem functions across catchment areas. By combining measures such as rainwater harvesting, contour bunding, vegetative buffer strips and groundwater recharge, these approaches mitigate runoff, reduce erosion and enhance soil moisture retention. This, in turn, supports diversified cropping systems and improves yield stability under variable climatic conditions. Successful interventions foster social learning and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that local institutions and farmers co-design management plans. Globally, integrated watershed strategies have proven effective in semi-arid regions, where decentralised water storage structures and landscape-scale soil and water conservation have increased cropping intensity by converting fallow land into productive fields. Such measures bolster rural livelihoods, strengthen resilience to drought and contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals by sustaining agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources.

Research from Nature Portfolio

A meta-analysis of dryland catchments evaluated rainwater harvesting interventions across varied rainfall and soil regimes. Findings revealed a rainfall threshold of 200–300 mm for runoff initiation and demonstrated that decentralised harvesting structures can enhance groundwater levels by 2.6–6.9 m, double or triple crop intensification and boost farmers’ incomes by up to 200 %. Annual soil loss was reduced by 70 %, from approximately 3 tonnes per hectare to 1 tonne per hectare, and average surface runoff harvest reached 40 mm. This work emphasises the hydrological thresholds essential for planning interventions and quantifies their impacts on water availability, soil conservation and agricultural productivity at landscape scales.

Sustainable Watershed Management for Agricultural Productivity publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in sustainable watershed management for agricultural productivity across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Watershed: A land area draining into a common watercourse, where integrated management regulates water flow and quality.

Rainwater harvesting: Collection and storage of runoff for irrigation or groundwater recharge.

Runoff threshold: The minimum cumulative rainfall required to generate measurable surface flow.

Crop intensification: Increasing output per unit area through better water use, inputs and management.

Soil erosion: Loss of topsoil by water or wind, reduced by conservation structures and vegetation cover.
