Synthesis and Characterization of Titania Nanomaterials
Summary
Titania nanomaterials, encompassing polymorphs such as anatase, rutile and brookite at the nanoscale, have attracted sustained interest due to their high surface area, photoactivity and chemical stability. Synthesis methods range from hydrothermal and sol–gel routes to vapour-phase and template-directed approaches, enabling precise control over particle size, morphology and phase composition. Characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, spectroscopic methods and nitrogen physisorption routinely elucidate crystalline structure, surface chemistry, porosity and optical properties. Recent advances have focused on tailoring defect density, doping and hierarchical architectures to enhance photocatalytic efficiency, dye-sensitised solar cell performance and environmental remediation. Interdisciplinary collaborations have propelled the transition from batch processing to scalable, green manufacturing. These developments underpin the global relevance of titania nanomaterials in energy conversion, water treatment and advanced coatings, offering a robust platform for both fundamental study and practical deployment.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Recent studies have elucidated the structural evolution of metatitanic acid during hydrolysis of titanyl sulfate solutions, demonstrating that particle aggregation, lattice strain and pore architecture critically influence iron removal and purity of the resulting TiO2. Controlled hydrolysis parameters yielded compact metatitanic acid precipitates with reduced ferrous content and optimised micropore–mesopore networks, supporting more efficient pigment production with lower water and energy consumption. Another investigation employed response surface methodology to refine hydrothermal treatment of industrial metatitanic acid, achieving near-monodisperse anatase nanoparticles with 99.99 % purity. By systematically varying temperature, slurry concentration and time, the study identified synergistic effects on nucleation, crystallisation and impurity adsorption, culminating in a predictive model for high-purity TiO2 synthesis.
