Summary
Decapod crustaceans comprise an extraordinarily diverse order of malacostracan arthropods that includes crabs, lobsters, shrimps and their relatives. Systematics aims to resolve their evolutionary relationships by integrating morphological characters—such as carapace shape, cheliped structure, pleon segmentation and gonopod morphology—with molecular phylogenetic data. Modern revisions have refined higher‐level classification, delineating superfamilies and families based on synapomorphic traits and genetic markers. Morphological diversity is manifest in the variations of the carapace ornamentation and appendage specialisations, which reflect ecological adaptations from intertidal mudflats to deep‐sea hydrothermal vents. Advances in imaging techniques, including micro‐CT scanning and scanning electron microscopy, have elucidated fine details of exoskeletal and internal structures such as the gastric mill. These insights underpin a more robust framework for taxonomic keys and evolutionary inference, revealing instances of convergent evolution and cryptic speciation across global lineages.
