Summary

The family Mutillidae, commonly known as velvet ants, comprises over 4 000 described species across more than 100 genera and eight to ten recognised subfamilies. These solitary aculeate wasps are characterised by extreme sexual dimorphism, with wingless females bearing dense setae that often mimic velvet. Systematic studies have combined detailed morphological assessments—such as integument sculpturing, setal patterns and genitalia structure—with emerging molecular phylogenetic data to resolve relationships among subfamilies and tribes. Early classifications, based primarily on external morphology, have been refined by cladistic analyses employing both adult female and male characters to test monophyly of traditional lineages. Recent efforts in integrative taxonomy have further incorporated DNA sequence data to delimit cryptic species and reassess genus-level boundaries, revealing instances of convergent evolution in traits linked to host use and habitat preference.
