Systemic Functional Linguistics in Language Education

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) offers a theory of language that foregrounds its functional character within social contexts. Developed by M.A.K. Halliday, it conceives language as a network of choices deployed to make meaning, organising experience, enacting interpersonal relations and crafting coherent texts. In educational settings, SFL has informed curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment by providing a metalanguage to analyse registers, genres and discourse patterns across disciplines. By emphasising the interplay between language form and social function, it enables learners to access the specialised discourses of academia, science and the professions. Practical applications include explicit instruction in genre-based writing cycles, integration of multimodal resources and scaffolding learners’ metalinguistic awareness. Global research has demonstrated how SFL underpins bilingual classroom practices, supports content and language integrated learning and fosters critical literacy. This approach promotes learner agency by equipping students with analytical tools to navigate diverse linguistic demands and to construct meaning in authentic contexts.

Genre: A staged, goal-oriented text type that fulfils a social purpose and follows a recognisable structure.

Metalanguage: A specialised set of terms and concepts used to describe and analyse language features and functions.

Scaffolding: Instructional support provided to learners to help them progress in their language and conceptual understanding within a given context.
