Taxonomic Diversity and Biogeography of Marine Isopods
Summary
Marine isopods represent one of the most speciose groups of malacostracan crustaceans, encompassing at least six suborders, over 300 families and some 10,000 described species worldwide. Major lineages such as Cymothoida, Asellota and Sphaeromatidea dominate shallow coastal and deep-sea habitats, while Valvifera, Limnorioidea and Oniscidea occupy specialised niches from intertidal algal beds to brackish lagoons. Patterns of taxonomic diversity are driven by a combination of habitat heterogeneity, oceanographic barriers and life history strategies, resulting in centres of endemism in coral reefs, fjord systems and abyssal plains. Biogeographical analyses reveal distinct latitudinal gradients, depth-related turnover and repeated colonisation events mediated by larval dispersal and adult brooding. Recent advances in molecular phylogenetics and DNA barcoding have exposed extensive cryptic diversity, prompting re-evaluation of generic boundaries and species ranges. Integration of morphological keys with genetic markers has enhanced the resolution of distributional maps and fostered global assessments of conservation status, illustrating the ecological significance of isopods as grazers, scavengers, symbionts and bioindicators across marine ecosystems.

Taxonomic Diversity and Biogeography of Marine Isopods publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in taxonomic diversity and biogeography of marine isopods across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Taxonomic diversity: The number and relative abundance of taxa at various hierarchical levels within a community or region.
Biogeography: The study of the spatial distribution of species and ecosystems through geological time.
Suborder: A taxonomic rank below the order and above the family, used to group organisms sharing common characteristics.
COI gene: Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, a mitochondrial DNA marker widely used for species identification in DNA barcoding.
16S rRNA: A mitochondrial ribosomal RNA gene commonly employed in phylogenetic studies to infer relationships among taxa.
