Summary

Aquatic Heteroptera, encompassing both fully aquatic (Nepomorpha) and semiaquatic (Gerromorpha) lineages, represent a globally distributed clade of water-dwelling true bugs. With more than 5 000 described species inhabiting lentic and lotic systems, these insects occupy pivotal trophic positions as predators of invertebrates, small fish and amphibians, and contribute to nutrient cycling in freshwater habitats. Taxonomic frameworks have traditionally relied on external morphology—wing venation, setal patterns and genital structures—but recent advances in molecular phylogenetics and morphometric analysis are refining genus- and species-level boundaries. Ecological dynamics of aquatic Heteroptera are shaped by hydrological regimes, temperature gradients and habitat complexity, with species distributions reflecting both dispersal capability (for example macropterous forms) and physiological tolerance.
