Teacher Beliefs and Practices in Language Education
Summary
Teacher beliefs encompass the underlying assumptions, values and knowledge that educators hold about language learning and pedagogy, and these beliefs invariably shape classroom practices, decision-making and professional identity. Research in this field has charted the dynamic interplay between cognitive constructs—such as grammar teaching philosophies, motivation theories and sociocultural perspectives—and observable enactments, including lesson design, interactional patterns and assessment choices. Over the past decade, studies have underscored that teacher beliefs are neither stable nor monolithic: they evolve through reflection, experience and engagement with curriculum reforms, policy demands and collegial dialogue. Globally, there has been growing recognition of the need to bridge the gap between espoused beliefs and enacted practices, particularly as teachers negotiate top-down mandates alongside learners’ diverse linguistic repertoires. Practical applications emphasise sustainable professional development, reflective teaching cycles and collaborative inquiry, all aimed at fostering congruence between teachers’ pedagogical convictions and their classroom enactments. In turn, such alignment supports more coherent, learner-centred and culturally responsive language education.
