Therapeutic Applications of Copaiba Oil Constituents

Summary

Copaiba oil, an oleoresin obtained from the trunks of Copaifera trees, comprises a volatile fraction dominated by sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (for example β-caryophyllene and α-humulene) and a non-volatile portion rich in diterpene acids (such as copalic, kaurenoic and polyalthic acids). Together, these constituents exhibit a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities. Anti-inflammatory effects arise from modulation of cytokine cascades and inhibition of pro-inflammatory enzymes, while antioxidant mechanisms support tissue repair and re-epithelialisation in wound-healing models. Antimicrobial properties span both planktonic and biofilm-associated Gram-positive bacteria, with diterpene acids demonstrating low micromolar minimum inhibitory concentrations against key pathogens. Certain sesquiterpenes have shown antiparasitic activity, notably against protozoan infections, without significant host toxicity. Advances in formulation science—particularly nanoencapsulation—have improved the solubility, stability and targeted delivery of these lipophilic compounds, paving the way for novel phytotherapeutic medicines aimed at respiratory, dermatological and dental applications. The convergence of traditional knowledge and modern drug-delivery technologies underscores the global relevance of copaiba oil constituents in addressing antibiotic resistance, chronic inflammation and oral health challenges.

Therapeutic Applications of Copaiba Oil Constituents publication trend

The graph below shows the total number of articles in therapeutic applications of copaiba oil constituents across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).

Technical terms

Oleoresin: A natural fluid exudate consisting of essential oils and resinous diterpenoids produced by certain plant species.

Sesquiterpene hydrocarbon: A class of 15-carbon terpenoids, often volatile, that contribute to aroma and possess diverse bioactivities including anti-inflammatory effects.

Diterpene acid: A 20-carbon terpenoid bearing one or more carboxylic acid groups, responsible for many of the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of copaiba oil.

Polymeric nanocapsule: A submicron-sized vesicular system formed by biodegradable polymers, used to encapsulate and protect lipophilic compounds, enhancing their delivery and bioavailability.

Anticariogenic: The property of inhibiting the development or progression of dental caries by preventing bacterial growth or biofilm formation on tooth surfaces.

Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC): The lowest concentration of an antimicrobial agent required to inhibit visible growth of a microorganism under defined conditions.
