Tissue Regeneration Techniques for Osteoarthritis Management
Summary
Osteoarthritis is characterised by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage and subchondral bone, leading to pain, stiffness and functional impairment. Tissue regeneration strategies aim to restore joint integrity by harnessing the intrinsic repair capacity of cells and biomaterials. Current approaches include autologous cell therapies—such as mesenchymal stem cells and micrografts—combined with bioactive scaffolds that mimic the extracellular matrix and deliver growth factors. Advanced biodegradable polymers provide structural support and degrade in synchrony with new tissue formation. Mechanical stimulation protocols, including continuous passive motion, further promote chondrogenesis and subchondral bone remodelling. Integration of minimally invasive delivery methods with real‐time imaging and biomechanical assessment has improved evaluation of regenerative outcomes. Collectively, these advances hold promise for delaying or reversing joint deterioration and reducing the need for joint replacement.

Tissue Regeneration Techniques for Osteoarthritis Management publication trend
The graph below shows the total number of articles in tissue regeneration techniques for osteoarthritis management across all publications each year (not limited to Nature Index journals).
Technical terms
Chondrocyte: A specialised cell responsible for synthesising and maintaining cartilage matrix.
Autologous micrograft: A fragment of a patient’s own tissue that is mechanically processed to generate a suspension of viable cells and extracellular matrix for reimplantation.
Scaffold: A three-dimensional biomaterial construct designed to support cell adhesion, proliferation and organised tissue development.
Osteochondral defect: A combined lesion of articular cartilage and the underlying subchondral bone.
Polycaprolactone: A biodegradable polymer used in implantable scaffolds to provide temporary mechanical support and gradually degrade as new tissue forms.
