Tracheal Collapse Management in Canine Health
Summary
Tracheal collapse is a progressive weakening of the cartilaginous rings in the canine trachea, most commonly affecting small and toy breeds. Clinical signs include chronic cough, respiratory distress, exercise intolerance and secondary airway inflammation. Management strategies span medical, environmental and interventional approaches. Medical therapy typically comprises weight reduction, cough suppressants, anti-inflammatories and bronchodilators. Environmental measures focus on minimising airway irritants and stress, often with harness use instead of collars. Interventional options include intraluminal stenting—most frequently with self-expanding nitinol devices—and novel extraluminal prostheses. Imaging modalities such as radiography, fluoroscopy and computed tomography guide diagnosis and severity grading, while emerging serum biomarkers offer objective measures of disease progression. Key challenges in long-term stent management include granulation tissue formation and device-related complications. A multidisciplinary approach tailored to individual patient severity has improved quality of life and prolonged survival in affected dogs globally.
