Trade Agreements and Regional Economic Integration
Summary
Trade agreements and regional economic integration encompass formal arrangements among sovereign states to reduce or eliminate barriers to the movement of goods, services, capital and labour. These arrangements range from bilateral preferential trade agreements and customs unions, through free-trade areas and common markets, to fully integrated economic and monetary unions. By harmonising tariffs, regulations and standards, members seek to expand market access, stimulate competition, foster economies of scale and attract foreign direct investment. Integration can generate dynamic gains from innovation, enhanced supply-chain resilience and accelerated diffusion of technology, but may also give rise to trade diversion, regulatory complexity and concerns over national policy autonomy. Recent trends include the proliferation of mega‐regionals that span multiple continents, the incorporation of rules on digital commerce and sustainability, and the use of advanced quantitative methods to inform accession and policy design. Against a backdrop of shifting geopolitical alliances, climate objectives and supply‐chain realignments, research is increasingly focused on the comparative advantages of different integration models, the distributional effects on labour and capital, and the mechanisms by which regional blocs interface with multilateral governance under the World Trade Organization.
