Traditional Chinese Medicine Applications in Esophageal Cancer Treatment
Summary
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a multifaceted approach to esophageal cancer management, integrating botanical extracts, injectable formulations and herbal decoctions as adjuvant or standalone therapies. Research spans preclinical investigations of anti-tumour and anti-metastatic activity, bioinformatic elucidation of molecular targets and systematic evaluations of clinical outcomes when TCM is combined with surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Key mechanisms include induction of apoptosis, inhibition of invasion-related enzymes, modulation of immune function and enhancement of patient quality of life. Modern analyses harness network pharmacology and gene co-expression profiling to reveal how complex herbal mixtures engage signalling pathways such as PI3K–Akt and ErbB, while clinical meta-analyses rank the relative efficacy and safety of specific injections. Together, these efforts highlight TCM’s potential to improve treatment response, reduce toxicity and identify novel biomarkers for precision care.
Research from Nature Portfolio
Preclinical work on Andrographis paniculata water extract demonstrated potent anti-metastatic effects in oesophageal cancer xenografts, suppressing factors such as HER2, MMP2 and CXCR4, and acting synergistically with cisplatin plus 5-fluorouracil to inhibit tumour nodules while mitigating chemotherapy-induced side-effects. Complementing these findings, an integrated bioinformatics study applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis alongside network pharmacology to Compound Kushen injection. Key hub targets including EGFR, ErbB2, CCND1 and IGF1R were identified, with molecular docking confirming strong binding of active compounds. Pathway enrichment pointed to modulation of PI3K–Akt and ErbB signalling, providing a mechanistic basis for CKI’s clinical efficacy.
