Recent investigations into the expansion of licence plate restrictions to weekend periods in a major Latin American metropolis revealed no significant reductions in PM2.5, PM10, NO₂ or CO concentrations. Despite predictive models forecasting substantial emission cuts, observed data showed persistent reliance on private vehicles and negligible shifts to bus, subway or light rail systems. These findings underscore that temporal extensions of driving bans, in isolation, fail to deliver anticipated air quality improvements without concurrent enhancements in alternative mobility options. Current work is exploring the integration of real-time emission monitoring with adaptive traffic controls to trigger targeted restrictions and achieve more immediate pollution abatement.
