Transformational Leadership and Employee Engagement Dynamics
Summary
Transformational leadership is characterised by behaviours that inspire, intellectually stimulate and individually support employees, encouraging them to transcend routine performance and embrace organisational vision. By articulating a compelling purpose, modelling ethical conduct and fostering autonomy, transformational leaders cultivate an environment in which employees experience heightened levels of vigour, dedication and absorption—collectively known as work engagement. Contemporary research has illuminated the psychological and job-related mechanisms underpinning this dynamic, notably the roles of intrinsic motivation, job resources and personal resources such as self-efficacy and resilience. Engagement, in turn, has been shown to mediate the relationship between leadership and a range of outcomes, including job performance, organisational commitment and innovation. Studies have also identified boundary conditions—such as tenure, gender and contextual factors—that moderate the strength of these associations. Across healthcare, hospitality, technology and public sectors worldwide, organisations are leveraging leadership development programmes and evidence-based interventions to sustain workforce motivation, enhance well-being and promote long-term organisational resilience.
