Transformational Leadership and Organizational Commitment
Summary
Transformational leadership is characterised by behaviours that elevate followers through the four I’s—idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualised consideration—ultimately fostering higher levels of engagement and performance. Organisational commitment refers to the psychological attachment and loyalty individuals develop towards their employing entity and is commonly parcelled into affective, normative and continuance forms. Research has shown that transformational leaders cultivate a climate of trust, innovation and shared vision, thereby enhancing employees’ willingness to remain with and contribute to the organisation. The interplay between leadership and commitment has been explored across corporate, public and healthcare settings, underlining its global significance. Practically, organisations can leverage transformational practices to improve retention rates, boost morale and drive strategic objectives, making it a critical focus for leadership development and human resource interventions worldwide.
