Summary
Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) represent a significant public health concern, affecting an estimated quarter of children and a substantial proportion of adults worldwide. Incidence peaks in the first and second decades of life, with males more frequently affected than females. The most common aetiologies include falls, sports-related impacts, traffic collisions and interpersonal violence. Clinically, TDIs range from minor enamel cracks to complex luxation, crown–root fractures and avulsions. Anatomical and behavioural risk factors such as increased overjet, inadequate lip coverage and contact sports participation have been shown to predispose individuals to higher injury rates. Prompt and appropriate management—encompassing repositioning of displaced teeth, flexible splinting, vital pulp therapy for fractures, and immediate replantation of avulsed teeth using suitable transport media—is critical for long-term prognosis. International consensus guidelines emphasise time-sensitive interventions, optimal storage media and follow-up care to minimise complications such as pulp necrosis, root resorption and ankylosis. Despite established protocols, gaps persist in awareness among first responders, educators and non-specialist clinicians, underscoring the need for broader educational initiatives and streamlined emergency pathways.

Overjet: Horizontal distance between the upper and lower incisors measured in millimetres.
Lip coverage: Degree to which the lips protect anterior teeth at rest, with inadequate coverage increasing trauma risk.
Avulsion: Complete displacement of a tooth from its socket.
Luxation: Displacement of a tooth within or outside its socket without full avulsion; includes concussion, subluxation and lateral displacement.
Splinting: Stabilisation of injured teeth by bonding to adjacent teeth using flexible materials to permit physiological movement and healing.
